We noticed that this sector, characterised by businesses investing to set up sustainable models for living and working, is growing considerably all throughout the world; so we thought it could be useful to provide examples of existing projects - below you will find their web locations:
Centre for Alternative Technology (Machynlleth, Wales, UK) CAT offers solutions to some of the most serious challenges facing the planet and the human race, such as climate change, pollution and the waste of precious resources. CAT intends to demonstrate practical ways of addressing these problems, leading by example, to show that living more sustainably is not only easy to attain but can provide a better quality of life. CAT addresses every aspect of the average lifestyle - the key areas being renewable energy, environmental building, energy efficiency, organic growing and alternative sewage systems. It hosts a visitors centre, an information centre, an education centre for children and adults, a small publishing house, a media centre and offers consulting services and a Masters course.
Center for Ecoliteracy (Berkeley, California) The Center for Ecoliteracy is dedicated to education for sustainable living. The Center is a pioneer in providing tools, ideas, and support for combining hands-on experience in the natural world with curricular innovation in K-12 education. It administers a grant program and donor-advised funds, publishes extensively online and in print, and offers resources, seminars, and technical assistance in support of systemic change. It was founded in 1995 by Fritjof Capra, Peter Buckley, and Zenobia Barlow.
Ecological Solutions - Crystal Waters (Conondale, Australia) A socially and environmentally responsible, economically viable rural subdivision north of Brisbane (Australia), Crystal Waters was designed by Max Lindegger, Robert Tap, Barry Goodman and Geoff Young, and established in 1987. It received the 1996 World Habitat Award for its "pioneering work in demonstrating new ways of low impact, sustainable living". Crystal Waters has become a community of 200 people with a multitude of businesses and food producing gardens. The village centre is zoned for commerce, light industry, tourism and educational activities. Ecological Solutions, a company located in the community, provides design consultancy and education in the disciplines of sustainable development and living.
Instituto Permacultura Montsant (Arbolì, Tarragona, Spain) This Institute was funded by Richard Wade and Ines Sanchez with the objective of pushing the transition towards a sustainable society. Among the main activities there are: permaculture school, professional services for ecological design, consulting services for permaculture projects.
Panta Rei (Passignano, Perugia, Italy) Panta Rei is an eco-village where children and adults can live, play and work for short periods of time, experimenting with low environmental impact consumption and living patterns. The main activities are educational, and there is a restaurant service for guests. All buildings make use of natural materials, energy is provided by sun, wind and biomasses, and all resource management systems are controlled from the beginning to the end of the cycle. The centre is located on a natural terraced area facing lake Trasimeno.
Schumacher College (Devon, UK) It is an international learning institution for adults offering a dense programme ranging from short 4-days classes to longer 3-weeks courses on a variety of subjects, such as economy, business, design, ecology and art. It offers a Masters of Holistic Sciences (MSc), first in its kind, and a Teaching Certificate. There are weekly evening meetings open to the local community, seminars and collaborative projects throughout the year. The college offers accommodation and food to students (included in the fee), the community is responsible for cooking and part of what is cooked is grown in the garden; there is a library and a space for meditation, and walking tours and similar activities are organised.
Scuola di Pratiche Sostenibili at the Cascina S. Brera (S. Giuliano Milanese, Italy) The School was created within the cultural framework of permaculture and sustainable human settlements based on ecological and ethic principles. Classes take place both indoor and outdoor; the practical sessions use a methodology of knowledge-sharing between professor and students in a spirit of reciprocal growth. The School is promoted by the Cultural Association Cascina Santa Brera. All buildings in the Cascina make use of solar and biomass energy systems.
